Filament 3D printing, officially known as Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) or Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF), is the most common and accessible form of 3D printing.
Think of it like a high-tech, robotic hot glue gun. It creates objects by melting a plastic string (the filament) and drawing it layer-by-layer on a platform until a solid object is formed.
How the Process Works
The process follows three main steps:
Feeding: A motor (the extruder) pulls the plastic filament from a spool and pushes it into a “hotend.”
Melting: The hotend heats the plastic until it becomes a semi-liquid, honey-like consistency.
Layering: The printer moves the nozzle in a specific path (X and Y axes), squeezing out a thin bead of plastic. Once a layer is finished, the platform moves down (or the nozzle moves up), and the next layer is printed on top of the first.
